As most of you heard by now, DJ Mehdi passed away recently. I have had the honor and pleasure to have met and hung out with Mehdi on several occasions. My crew, Massive Selector, actually booked his first appearance in SF at Poleng Lounge 2006. Not that many people came, mainly the hipsters from the Rickshaw Stop but it was a great chance to get to know Mehdi before the star he became. My boy Desi, as well as everyone else, expected him to play his electro stuff… but Mehdi said “fuck it” and played Mobb Deep all night! needless to say… RESPECT!

Favorite Mehdi Tune

These photos were from NYC CMJ 2007.. it was the Ed Banger and Fool’s gold show case.. the party was wild!

HEART SOUL SPIRIT: THE ART OF MICHAEL V. RIOS
Opening Reception @ peek gallery at The Summit
780 Valencia Street, San Francisco
all ages | 7-10pm | FREE

Peek Gallery at The Summit is excited to announce it will be hosting “Heart Soul Spirit”, an exhibit featuring artwork from renowned artist and muralist, Michael Rios. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 7th from 5:00-9pm with Michael Rios in attendance. The exhibit will showcase various types of Michael’s artwork, ranging from a display of his vibrant and illustrious murals to Fillmore concert posters to original artwork produced for local great Carlos Santana and many other counter-cultural music figures such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and John Lee Hooker. The exhibit will also highlight the artist’s cultural significance and impact on street art and the Mission community. Being one of the earliest muralists and street artists in San Francisco, the exhibit will give attendees a rare opportunity to look into the past to see several of the Mission’s early murals that caught the attention of artists worldwide, and helped transform the neighborhood into the thriving cultural center it is today. At the opening reception, several pieces of Michael’s artwork from one-of-a-kind fine art paintings to rich graphic reproductions and exclusive, limited-edition t-shirts will be available for sale. The exhibit will stay open to the public at Peek Gallery at The Summit until May 19th.

About Michael V. Rios
Born in Oakland, California, Michael V. Rios attended and graduated from San Francisco Academy of Art College. In the seventies, Michael turned his attention towards San Francisco’s Mission District, creating some of the first large murals on its city blocks, elevating the area’s cultural profile while in turn earning him national acclaim. Since then, art lovers, collectors, critics and aficionados alike across the world have praised and celebrated his work’s unparalleled scope and depth. From the beloved 24th Street Mini Park to the 24th Street BART station to the many other countless murals, over the years his work has gained widespread appreciation among its residents and, in turn, has helped inspire newer generations of street artists. His most famous mural, located at South Van Ness and 22nd Street entitled “Inspire to Aspire,” featured and caught the attention of famous musician and Mission resident Carlos Santana. From there, Michael met with and collaborated with the musician, contributing concert backdrop designs, custom clothing, guitars, artwork for multiple albums, including the cover art for the Grammy Award winning “Supernatural.” Other artists, including Grammy Award winner Poncho Sanchez, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Steve Winwood, as well as the Latin Grammy Recording Academy have since commissioned him to produce artwork for their productions. Michael has also contributed art to the Mars Family, the Andre Agassi Foundation, Sony Signatures, LP Percussion and AGInteractive.
